Teeth Whitener – The Dentist’s Verdict

If you’re looking for an effective teeth whitener, it can be tempting to turn to DIY kits.
The Daily Mail consulted a dentist with 25 years’ experience with teeth whitener to check out some of the whitening products consumers could buy off the shelf. His verdict? When it comes to home tooth whitening kits, proceed with caution!

We all want to save money and parting with huge sums of cash to pay a cosmetic dentist can be as painful as extracting a tooth. But how we feel about our teeth can have a huge impact on our self esteem. If your teeth are worn, damaged, crooked or yellowing, it’s not surprising you feel reluctant to flash your smile. Having your teeth fixed and whitened can be transformative. And as we only have one set of teeth, it’s important that we only turn to the professionals for tooth whitener, as the Daily Mail uncovered.

The Dangers of Home Teeth Whitener Kits
Dr Philip Stemmer went through a variety of teeth whiteners for the newspaper and delivered his verdict. Tooth whitening is big business. It’s one of the fastest growing sectors in the cosmetic industry. But it’s crucial you make an informed choice. The British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has warned consumers that DIY teeth whiteners can not only fail to give effective results, they can even cause permanent damage. According to Dr Stemmer: The Big White Smile Professional Whitening Treatment may cost around £90 and use “professional” strength hydrogen peroxide but it still causes concern for dentists. Dr Stemmer concludes:
“My big concern here, however, is that the gel is not applied to the teeth with a close-fitting, custom-made tray, so areas could be missed during the bleaching process or the powerful whitening gel could leak out onto the gums and into the mouth. The danger is that this can lead to blistering and sensitivity.”

Teeth Whitener Toothpastes
Further down the price scale is Theramed Perfect Express White Intensive Whitening Toothpaste at £3.99. It promises whiter teeth in seven days but the dentist said the toothpaste is not a whitening product in a true sense. The paste didn’t contain powerful whitening products but did contain a harsh abrasive that could cause significant damage to enamel or cause gums to recede. Other toothpastes that claim to be whitening can be “misleading” as the pastes cannot bleach teeth, only help remove stains. Teeth whitening toothpastes can help keep discolouration at bay but won’t whiten teeth.
