A Brief History of Tooth Whitening

White teeth have been sought after all throughout history, but gone are the days when your local 18th century barber would apply corrosive acid to your teeth to brighten them up and destroy the enamel in the process. Read our brief history of teeth whitening for how it became much safer and, unsurprisingly much more popular.
It was in the 1980s when the first cosmetic dentistry tooth whitening products became widely used in the dental profession, with the ‘breakthrough’ teeth whitening product carbamide peroxide being increasingly used as a teeth whitener.

Tooth Whitening-Early days
By the mid-1990s, people could easily get teeth whitening products over the counter. Those products were available primarily as toothpastes with an added milt tooth whitener and as easy to apply solutions applied to teeth after the brushing process. They contained the same active ingredients used in professional in-office whitening procedures but were milder and as a result less effective. These mass market commercial teeth whiteners generally improved the appearance of the teeth and could, to a certain extent, make them seem slightly lighter in colour.

However, they were not very good at removing deeper stains on the enamel. Fortunately, much study has been made on the causes of teeth staining and discoloration making it easier to find the best and most effective tooth whitening treatment for each case. The best results came from better teeth whitening products used by expert cosmetic dentists. These more powerful tooth whiteners when expertly applied can produce much more satisfactory results for those who want a bigger brighter smile. There are a number of procedures available today that can allow almost anyone to whiten their teeth and beam a brighter smile.
